Grandpa’s Favorite

Portraits of little ones and their parents and grandparents are so special to me. As I have no children, each finished portrait becomes a part of my own family in some way, even as I hand it off to the client. My work may never grace the walls of art galleries around the world but I am completely happy knowing that several homes now have a part of my heart in a portrait that could last for generations to come. 💝3F5DD0AD-FA5D-41DF-94F8-E6A57CCEA875

Life is Precious

It’s a joyous time of the year for the most part …but for some it will be a difficult time. Many people have lost loved ones this year.

I know of a wonderful family who recently lost their father/son/husband, late 50s, diagnosed with a rare cancer just a few weeks ago. I was reminded again how life is so fragile and is but a vapor. Psalm 144:4 tells us this… “Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.”

I am often at a loss for words during difficult times; in spite of deep feelings I have. I am thankful for an outlet in art to express myself and share my heart.

I saw this sweet, special moment in a photo of the gentleman who passed with his only grandson and wanted to do something with it for his wife. As I studied it, I felt I wanted to convey the time, place, mood, feeling, and memory of this photo rather than the exact replication of the faces. So, I attempted to do a pen and watercolor wash to capture all the things the photo revealed to me. When I presented it to his wife, she immediately recalled the week the family was together at the time this photo was taken. It’s just a quick sketch, not my typical style, but I think it fulfilled what I’d hoped to accomplish.

Say a prayer for those who are hurting this season… and go hug your people! ❤️

Blessed to Be A Blessing

I recently got a request to do a drawing of this gentleman who recently suddenly passed away. I learned that he loved his family dearly….and that he was recognized as a sharp dresser.  I wanted to capture that in this drawing.

Requests for these ‘memorial’ type drawings have become a growing and important way that I am blessed to share my abilities.  Feeling grateful for the gift … and honored that I am trusted to share it with the others.💕

The Only Photo She Had

A few weeks ago I was commissioned to do a drawing of a client’s mother who had recently passed (see post on this page). This same client contacted me again to draw a picture of her father. She had only one photo of him and in the photo his head is leaning to the side in a somewhat awkward position. I used a bit of artistic leeway because the photo had many shadows and darkened areas. She asked me to draw it with his head straightened. I wanted to reposition the head but also I wanted to complete a drawing that would be an heirloom for her family since this was the client’s only photo of her dad. 💛
